Minutes from 11/12 general meeting read by Emily J. & approved by all
TREASURER REPORT – Casey S..
- Financial Report for November 2024 indicated current status as adequate.
- Donations from Starlighters will not be delivered until January 2025
CAPTAINS REPORT – Jim C
- Jim discussed recent notifications from CCSO CERT and asked if everyone is still receiving email from Jon P. from CCSO. If you have completed CERT Training and not receiving email from CCSO, please contact Jim C. and he will contact Jon to make sure you are on the list.
- Latest CERT Training opportunity is for Rail Car Incident Response (HAZMAT) to be held in Holbrook on February 6, 2025. Registration is requested to ensure there are enough interested attendees. If you need more info, contact Jim C.
PRESIDENTS REPORT – Casey S.
- Updated info on donation from Starlighters to indicate they will be sending donation in January 2025
- Discussion on new shed approved in November meeting
- Casey checked with BRFD and received approval to place shed on existing concrete pad behind fire station
- JR submitted letter to Home Depot requesting a quote for the shed. Info was passed along to Tuff Shed to possibly get better deal directly from them. Awaiting updated response on quote.
- Thanks to all who participated in the two recent searches. One for lost children where we supplemented CCSO agencies to help quickly locate the children. The other for a lost dog who was found after about a week in the forest.
- Prior to the general meeting a retrospective discussion was held to review processes in the child search.
- Team was commended for the ability to mobilize quickly and get people on the ground to assist.
- Mike B. provided an after action report detailing some of the process encountered. Team should consolidate their info into a single report for our records.
- Main concern from the incident was that it was not clear how to contact our team, and it required multiple calls to enable the team callout. Recommendation is to review our current systems and improve communication with agencies, including BRFD and CCSAR.
- Another recommendation is to ensure we can be identified as a team through wearing common “uniforms” to help agencies identify our team. Suggestion was made to provide a vest type of covering that is common and worn on all incident callouts, especially those involving other agencies.
- Additional desktop training sessions should be done to help assure systems and processes are adequate and followed, improving our ability to respond to different types of incidents.
OLD BUSINESS
- BRCST board member elections/approvals will be held in January
- Casey S. will transition to a President Emeritus role on the board
- Rod J. will assume President role
- Emily J. has agreed to continue as Secretary, unless someone would like to take over
- Daron K. was nominated for Vice President role
- Brian A. would like to transition Treasurer role if someone is willing to take over
- Please contact one of the board members if you are interested in assuming one of these roles
- Casey S discussed sweatshirts will be available for purchase. Estimated cost will be $30-35. Casey will coordinate.
- Recommended donation for members was discussed and it was decided to recommend $100 for individuals and $150 for couples to help assure base funding for 2025.
- There is still discussion on clarifying the Captain role in BRCST. We will review processes, organization roles, and any changes to the charter in the January meeting.
- Casey S provided feedback on the emergency alert system (siren) from November meeting.
- Discussed with BRFD chief and learned that the Coconino County Alert System currently used for weather, fire and other alerts, using location based messaging to cell phones would likely be a better, more current, system.
- This system works with the subscription service we have on our phones to send messages when an incident occurs, and may be tied in with things like “Amber Alert” to send notification to all phones in the area, regardless of subscription status.
- Casey will contact CC Alert to see what is available and how we can get incorporated into their processes for localized alerts.
- Current Team Leaders include:
- Dick K. for People Search
- Pam H for animal Search
- Cal H for Vehicle Recovery
- Nicole E for Community Service and Wellness
- These roles will be confirmed in January for 2025
- If you are interested in assuming one of the roles, or assist as a backup leader when they are not able to engage, please contact the folks above or a board member and we will gladly get you set up to assist.
NEW BUSINESS
- Discussed the plans to conduct an “Active Shooter” and “Stop the Bleed” courses locally in April or May 2025. CCSO is interested in providing the course for us to host. Casey and Jim will coordinate with CCSO to set up a date and prepare for hosting. Targeting May 2025 to help ensure more people will be available on the mountain.
- Dick K mentioned that BRFD has agreed to provide training in December for vehicle inspection to review what equipment and inventory is available on BRFD vehicles, should we engage to assist. Tentative schedule is December 21, 2025 at 10:00 – 12:00. Time needs to be confirmed due to potential conflict.
- As part of process improvement, it was suggested that the January 2025 meeting include a desktop training exercise, along with the process and organization discussions
- Findings from the child search incident suggest we review current communications procedures. Casey and Rod will work with Ken T to review options and cost to improve stability and help assure we are able to respond quickly.
- The new AZ requirement for OHV use, regarding a training requirement was discussed. Training is online and free, but will be required for OHV use. This provides another opportunity for engaging local community to share info and get our info out.
- Daron asked about potential community training topics so he can prepare for next year. Broader training would likely occur starting in April as people begin to return. Please provide any suggestions for topics ASAP so he can prepare an we can advertise our “Training Plan”
